The 7 Checks to Make Before You Buy an LED Replacement

Check system voltage

Read the fixture label, old lamp and transformer. Determine whether you are dealing with low voltage or line voltage before shopping.

Check AC versus DC

If a landscape transformer supplies AC, choose an LED lamp rated for that AC input or explicitly marked for AC/DC operation.

Identify the exact lamp base

Two bulbs can look almost identical yet use different pin spacing, contact geometry or socket styles.

Measure the available physical space

LED electronics can make the replacement lamp longer or wider than the original halogen bulb.

Check enclosure and outdoor rating

An outdoor fixture may trap heat and moisture. Use an LED suited to the fixture environment and any enclosed-fixture limitation stated by the lamp maker.

Check transformer behavior at the lower load

An LED conversion can reduce total system wattage dramatically. Make sure the existing transformer and controls remain stable at that new load.

Inspect the fixture before blaming the bulb

Corrosion, loose sockets, burned contacts, water intrusion and deteriorated cable splices should be repaired before an LED conversion.

How to Identify the Old Portfolio Bulb Base

Do not identify a replacement solely by “it has two pins” or “it looks like an MR16.” The old lamp is your most valuable piece of evidence.

Save the old bulb until the conversion is finished. Photograph every marking and measure pin spacing before discarding it. The lamp often tells you more than a faded fixture sticker.

Do You Need to Replace the Portfolio Transformer When Converting to LED?

Usually not automatically. A healthy transformer can often continue supplying compatible LED lamps, but the old transformer still needs to be evaluated.

LED conversion often cuts connected load dramatically. A system that once carried ten 20-watt halogen lamps used 200 watts of lamp load; ten 4-watt LEDs would use only 40 watts.

Measure Voltage at the Fixture, Not Just at the Transformer

One of the most useful tests in an LED conversion is also one of the most frequently skipped: measure the voltage where the lamp actually operates.

A transformer can show reasonable output at its terminals while the farthest fixture receives less because of cable length, wire gauge, poor splices, corrosion or overloaded branches.

Use a three-point voltage check

  1. Transformer output under load — establishes source voltage.
  2. Nearest fixture under load — shows what the first part of the run receives.
  3. Farthest fixture under load — exposes voltage drop and connection losses.
Information-gain diagnostic: If the same LED lamp works correctly in the fixture nearest the transformer but not in the farthest fixture, stop shopping for different bulbs. Move the diagnosis to cable voltage, splice resistance and socket condition.

12V AC vs 12V DC: The Compatibility Detail That Causes Many Bad LED Swaps

Traditional low-voltage landscape-lighting systems commonly use a transformer to reduce household voltage to low-voltage AC. Some replacement LED lamps accept AC, some accept DC, and many modern products are designed for either.

The safe purchasing rule is simple: the lamp's marked input must include the type of power your system actually supplies.

Physical fit does not prove electrical compatibility. A DC-only LED may fit perfectly in a socket supplied by AC. Read the input specification, not just the base number.

Integrated LED Portfolio Fixtures: Why There May Be No Bulb to Convert

If you remove the lens and find an LED board or module instead of a conventional socket, the fixture is already an LED fixture. The repair path is completely different.

  • Power arriving at fixture: Is the correct input present?
  • Driver/regulation: Is an internal driver or control stage functioning?
  • LED module: Is the emitter board itself serviceable or replaceable?

Many integrated fixtures were not designed around standardized user-replaceable LED modules. If the original module or driver is unavailable, a clean retrofit may require more modification than the fixture is worth.

How to Make an LED Conversion Still Look Like the Original Portfolio Lighting

Electrical compatibility is only half of the conversion. A technically correct LED can make an older landscape look completely different if the color temperature, beam spread or brightness is wrong.

Match lumens, not just watts

A 4-watt LED is not automatically the visual equivalent of every 20-watt halogen lamp. Compare lumen output and, for directional lamps, beam angle.

Beam angle can matter more than total lumens

A narrow LED spotlight can look much brighter on a tree than a higher-lumen wide flood. For uplights and accent fixtures, match the old beam effect—not merely wattage.

Can You Mix Halogen and LED Portfolio Lights on the Same Transformer?

In many low-voltage systems, electrically compatible halogen and LED lamps can coexist during a staged conversion. A mixed system changes load distribution and can produce large differences in color, brightness and voltage behavior.

Safety: Low Voltage Is Safer to Work Around, but It Is Still an Electrical System

Turn off power before opening fixtures, replacing damaged sockets or disturbing wiring. Remember that a low-voltage landscape system has a line-voltage primary side at the transformer. Do not open or modify the transformer unless you are qualified to work on that equipment.

Outdoor connections must remain suitable for their location. An LED lamp will not compensate for a splice that fills with water or a fixture with deteriorated insulation.
