Vintage Glass: Preserve the Pattern Before Cleaning

Glass is often the least replaceable part of an older decorative fixture. Before removing it, photograph every panel in position and mark orientation with removable labels placed on non-visible edges.

Measure more than height and width

  • Thickness at several points.
  • Curvature or bow.
  • Edge bevel, notch or radius.
  • Panel taper from top to bottom.

Vintage finishes are layered systems. What looks like dirt may be intentional antiquing, and what looks like solid bronze may be painted aluminum or steel.
