⛏️ Burial Depth — NEC Table 300.5
Table 300.5 is a matrix of location (rows) × wiring method (columns). The critical column for landscape lighting is Column 5: "Circuits for Control of Irrigation and Landscape Lighting, 30 Volts or Less." This column specifies 6 inches minimum in all residential locations — including under driveways — because the ≤30V voltage class presents minimal shock hazard compared to line voltage.
Exceptions that change this: Footnote A (listed systems with installation-specific instructions may allow shallower depth). Under streets/highways: inspector may require conformance to Column 1 (24") regardless of voltage. Always verify with your AHJ.
⚡ Voltage Drop — DC/Low-Voltage Formula
For 12V/24V landscape lighting systems, the standard voltage drop formula for a home-run circuit is:
I = Watts ÷ Volts (amps)
R = Ω/ft (from resistance table)
VD% = (VD ÷ Source Voltage) × 100
Target: ≤5% for optimal brightness
Maximum: ≤10% for LED systems
Wire resistance (copper, Ω per 1,000 ft): 18 AWG=6.39 | 16=4.02 | 14=3.07 | 12=1.93 | 10=1.21 | 8=0.764. For a loop run with distributed fixtures, effective load point is approximately the midpoint of the run.
🔌 Transformer Load — NEC 411.6
NEC Article 411.6 limits landscape lighting system output to 25 amperes maximum. For a 12V transformer: 25A × 12V = 300W maximum output. For a 24V transformer: 25A × 24V = 600W maximum.
The 80% loading rule (NEC 210.19 informational note and general best practice): do not load a transformer above 80% of its rated capacity to allow headroom for startup current and future additions. A 300W transformer should carry no more than 240W of connected load.
Max Load (300W) = 300 × 0.80 = 240W
Primary Amps = Total Watts ÷ 120V

🔧 Conduit Fill — NEC Chapter 9, Table 1
NEC Chapter 9, Table 1 limits conductor fill as a percentage of conduit internal cross-sectional area:
2 conductors: 31% maximum fill
3+ conductors: 40% maximum fill
Fill% = (Conductor Area × Count)
÷ Conduit Internal Area
Nipple exception (≤24" length): 60%
Conductor areas (THHN/THWN, sq in): 18=0.0092 | 16=0.0109 | 14=0.0139 | 12=0.0181 | 10=0.0243 | 8=0.0437. Use NEC Chapter 9 Table 5 for other conductor types. Always use the specific conduit type's Table 4 internal area — PVC Sch 40 and Sch 80 have different IDs at the same trade size.
