In field practice, two types of post-installation documentation are commonly produced — redline drawings and true as-built drawings. They look similar but have different levels of formality, accuracy, and legal standing. Knowing which one you have determines how much you can rely on it.

What a Redline Drawing Is

The practical difference: a redline with illegible handwriting, inconsistent scale, or missing reference dimensions is not a useful document for someone trying to locate a buried wire three years after installation.
